31 Days | Reading

I love to read.  In fact, I rediscovered that this year.  I made a promise to myself that I would read more.  And I have to say that it has brought me a lot of happiness the last 9 months.  I even joined Goodreads and set a goal.  A goal of 30 books in 2012.  I only have one left and I am almost finished with it.
Why I had never thought about getting a library card is a question that I keep asking myself.  Taft and I went to the library for the first time in December and we have been there a lot this year.  Free books are a wonderful thing.
We are also blessed that our library has a great Children's Department.  Not only do they have books and movies to check out, but they have a great Children's Program.  They have special events throughout the year that we have been happy to attend.
In reconnecting with my own reading, I have started an even bigger love of books for Taft.  We spend a lot of time selecting books that are in the season and theme that he is working on in school.  And we also check out books on things that he is interested in himself.  If we are going to the museum to see dinosaurs, we get books on that.  If we go to a program on sea life, we get books on that.
Public libraries are wonderful.  Studies have shown that most children do not have books on their grade level available in their home.  You don't have to have money for books in order to have access.  Just a library card and a desire to read.
Reconnecting with reading this year has been a wonderful thing for me and an awesome thing for Taft.

  1. reading to our kids is so important too. When they did the letter "B" at school, Peyton's teacher set up a bear hunt. Peyton and I absolutely love the book Going on a Bear Hunt. Her teacher said it was very sad that she had several kids in her class that started crying hysterically as they did not want to hunt a bear. She had to explain that it was just pretend...they followed bear tracks to a teddy bear and got gummy bears. Makes me so sad, to realize that most kids do not have someone to read to them. There are so many places you have access to free books...there is no excuse.

  2. I love to read and love to read to Jack. I feel it is even more important for Jack to see me read because my husband is not a big reader.
