When I started to think about was of reconnecting, I knew that there are a few things that I try to do to connect with Taft. I am not saying that I feel disconnected to my child, in fact it is the opposite. But when Taft started Pre-K, I was reminded of just how important being connected with a child is. All the parents at our Pre-K meeting were told to please look at the bulletin boards outside the classrooms. This is where the teachers post what the children are working on that week, artwork, breakfast & lunch menus, and a list of items on the class Wish List. We were also told that it is a proven fact that children with involved parents do better in school. That simply asked them about their day makes the child feel that you think what they are doing is important.
I love looking at that bulletin board. I read it everyday that I go in the school. I also love the Weekly News sheets that his teacher sends home. The children have Show & Tell on Fridays and the theme is posted a week in advance for you to be decided what to bring in. It is very organized and makes it easy to find things to talk to your child about and ways to involve them in their education outside of the classroom.
This week, I was talking to his teacher and found out that she is trying to collect empty food containers and boxes. She is making the class a grocery store area. So when we got home, we went straight to the pantry to see what we could send. I explained to Taft what the items are for and he was very excited to get them ready to take to school. He even told me that I did a "great job".
It was a simple, free, way to let Taft know that we care about what he is doing in school. A very easy way to connect us, Taft, and his school.
